About the association
Introduction
Million Trees Association is a civil society organization based in Baghdad and registered with the Department of Non-Governmental Organizations at the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Iraq (certificate no. 1A77790, dated 15/09/2015). It specializes in combating desertification; establishing productive and desert forests; afforesting parks and streets; encouraging agriculture in homes, schools, and universities; preserving Iraq’s plant heritage; and calling for respect for the environment by building bridges of communication and cooperation with specialized bodies and individuals and drawing on accumulated expertise and experience.
The association also has a number of projects, studies, solutions, and innovations to halt desertification and stabilize sand using methods suited to the Iraqi and regional environment. It aspires to spread a culture of environmental awareness among the public through seminars and meetings, and by providing professional consultations and studies for environmental projects that help improve Iraq’s green environment, with the aim of creating job opportunities for the poor, farmers, and professionals.
The association is managed by a professional board of directors with diverse specializations in agriculture, afforestation, and administration.
Representation of the association in Iraq’s governorates
The association is currently working to update and activate its representation across Iraq’s governorates. Agricultural professionals already represent the association in several governorates, including Basra, Dhi Qar, Anbar, Najaf, and Kirkuk. These activists inform the association of environmental problems and the needs of afforestation projects in their areas, so that seedlings, seeds, and consultations can be provided; relevant official and non-governmental bodies can be contacted; and the distribution, documentation, and growth of the seeds and seedlings supplied by the association can be supervised.
Hundreds of agricultural activists and professionals from all Iraqi governorates also stay in contact through forums titled Million Trees Association and its General Assembly, and the Seeds Forum, where members exchange information and offer advice and practical solutions to environmental, afforestation, and agricultural problems.
